Can't We All Just Get Along?

Can't We All Just Get Along?

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together, we can do great things". Mother Teresa

Isn't that the crux of it? Recognizing the things others can do that you cannot. Others recognizing what you can do that they cannot.

Working as part of a group can be challenging. Personalities vary. Communication styles can be difficult to understand and manage. Frequently, people who become part of nonprofit boards have strong personalities and they bring skills that are unique and very valuable.

The trick is in how to get everyone working together. How to do that?

1. Listen

2. Bring people together, point out where they agree.

3. Point out the challenge and ask for their ideas on how to overcome those challenges.

4. Allow everyone to make a verbal committment about how they will move forward.

5. Don't expect everyone to become best friends. Cultivate respect among everyone.

6. Set the example of working successfully with all kinds of people.

Being part of a nonprofit can be challenging. Taking the lead in helping others to get along will make all the difference in the success of the organization.
