"We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak". Epictetus
Listening is a secret weapon. Okay, so not so secret. BUT the ability and willingness to listen is a super power, particularly in the nonprofit sector. Listening is THE key to successful communication.
Individuals have different communication styles and a good listener can discern how best to communicate with anyone.
You're in a meeting with potential members of the Board of Directors. You want to have them join your board because they have unique talents and abilities. They are reluctant because they are very busy.
First, meet with each person individually. Use reflective listening to let them know you heard their concerns. Address their concerns by making sure they understand the role of board members. They are still reluctant? Invite them to attend a board meeting. Show them that they are needed and the time spent is for a great cause. They still don't agree? Ask them for a couple of hours a year to help with a fund raiser.
Stay in touch with these people by including them on your email list. Check in from time to time for their input on ideas. You never know when their situation will change and they can join the board.
