"The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones". Chinese Proverb
We all want to accomplish big things. We are all capable of accomplishing big things. In some ways, that's why you started or became involved with a nonprofit.
How are big things accomplished? With small steps.
When fund raising, it's easy to want to go for the big bucks. BUT grantors want to see that you've already been raising funds. They want to see that you've put effort into applying for smaller amounts of money.
We have a relative in Colorado who started a nonprofit to support military families. She is former military herself. She is passionate. She is also wise. She started by applying for grants from local benefactors. That led to applying for and receiving funds from Walmart Spark Grants. The next step for her is to apply for larger funds. She's learned how to write a grant application, she knows how to pitch her cause, she's done the work to move onto larger grants.
Also, don't neglect the people around you. Individuals will freqently give when they know the need you are trying to fill. It's a matter of effective communication.
Grantors like to see that you've been willing to start small, to consistently make the effort needed to raise money. They want to reward those efforts.
Want to be successful in fund raising? Start small and build from there.
