What is a Leader?

What is a Leader?

“In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still.

Progress occurs when courageous,

skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”

President Harry Truman

Have you ever worked in a situation, whether for pay or volunteering, worked for a strong leader, someone you would follow no matter what? One of my careers was in recruiting. One of the questions I asked in a telephone interview involved asking about the best job the applicant had ever had. The majority of answers had to do with how the interviewee was treated by a past employer.

After Covid-19 restrictions were listed, many people did not run back to the workplace. Why? They said that the job they had before the lockdowns did not give them work-life balance. Some even went so far as to say that they didn’t like how they were treated in their previous job.

Frequently, leaders of nonprofits work with a small team of paid employees who are paid less than they know they could earn at a for-profit business. They work at the nonprofit because they have bought into the mission of the organization.

In addition, a leader in the nonprofit sector will be recruiting and working with volunteers. They are especially conscious of how they are treated. It is the cause that they volunteer to serve and that cause is exemplified by leadership. Want to lose volunteers quickly? Never say “thank you”, never compliment the work volunteers do, never do nice things for them in appreciation.
