"There's no place like home". Dorothy, the Wizard of Oz.
Thoughout the nonprofit world, great things are happening. Communiities are feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, providing medical services, assisting young people who transition out of foster care, the list is endless.
From time to time, we are going to highlight some of the great organizations that are thriving. Like all organizations, they started small. They struggled. They grew in spite of set backs. Take a few minutes to read about what's happening throughout the United States to end homelessness.
Operation Tiny Home, VCP, A Tiny Home for Good, The Oaks Foundation. These are all nonprofit organizations that provide housing to homeless individuals and families. Veterans account for 13% of the homeless population in the U.S. , according to Valor Healthcare. Numerous cities like Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle and Austin, Texas are all building tiny homes to relieve homelessness. The biggest obstacle in many of these programs is that the shelters are considered temporary. People return to homlessness once their term is complete.
Many organizations, particularly those that have greatest autonomy, are working toward a model where tiny home villages have gardens for growing food, bring employment recruitment opportunities to the occupants and create a sustainable atmosphere.
Some of the cities creating these villages work in tandem with nonpfrofits to fit the needs of their homeles population.
