What's Your Policy?

What's Your Policy?

“The wealth of time is the only wealth that is more valuable than human resources” - Sunday Adelaja

After a prolonged illness, the thought struck me that nonpofit organizations have small staffs so when someone is missing, it's a big deal.

However, because staff members are human, they are going to get sick, have family emergencies, etc. As a result, your organizaton needs policies in place on how to handle these situations.

To begin, never hurts to with an attorney who speicalizes in labor law in your state.

Ask yourself what is a reasonable policy. One week a year of paid time off to use you wish? Ten days per year paid sick leave? Two weeks paid vacation every year? Will the vacation time be cumulative? Use it or lose it? Who will cover for someone on vacation or out sick? The list of potential scenarios is long but in today's world, you need to be prepared. When policies are in place and enforced consistently, your organization can avoid a myriad of headaches.

Policies that are reasonable and consistent can save you personally and your organization a lot of pain.
