YOUR Mission

YOUR Mission

“It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs.”

Vaclav Havel

YOU have a mission. It may not be clear to you but you do. YOU have looked around your community and you have seen needs. You know how to meet at least one of those needs. You just don’t know where to start. Well, we do know. First step? Sit down in a comfortable chair or at your kitchen table with a piece of paper and pencil or pen. Write down your thoughts. Spend as much time as you need to get your thoughts down.

The next day, look at what you wrote. It may not be perfect but in what you have written is your mission, the purpose for your existence at this stage of life, the community need you know you can fill.

Here are examples of solid mission statements:

“The mission of The Women’s Center is to significantly improve the mental health and well-being of all members of the community through counseling, education, support and advocacy.”

The Women’s Center

“To provide medicines and health supplies to those in need around the world so they might experience life to the fullest”

Map International

“Callisto’s mission is to use technology to empower survivors of sexual violence”

Callisto

These mission statements have a pattern:

· The Cause

· The Action

· The Result

Look at what you wrote and highlight the answers to these questions:

· What is the cause or problem to solve?

· What action(s) will your organization take to solve the problem?

· What result will your organization have or how will things improve?
